Parenting Children and Youth with ADHD
Parenting a child/youth with ADHD can be challenging, but there are strategies that can help. When we learn about ADHD to understand the child/youth better, it helps us realize how parenting differently can bring stronger results. Basic beginnings with consistent daily routine, simple instructions, and smaller steps in tasks, helps your child/youth with their ability to grasp expectations, stay focused, and not feel overwhelmed. Encourage regular exercise to help release excess energy, coupled with monitoring and controlling screen time, as excessive exposure can exacerbate symptoms. Ensure your child/youth gets enough sleep and maintains a balanced diet. Also, no matter how resistant it feels, positive reinforcement for good behavior and provide frequent positive feedback is more effective than negative consequences. Be patient and understanding and remember that your child/youth’s behavior is not their fault. Consult with a healthcare professional about medication, seek help from therapists, support groups, or school resources. Be mindful of the importance of caring for your own stress and challenges of parenting a child/youth with ADHD. This course is taught by Lindsey and Zac Martin.
